Basti, UP, May 4 (UNI) All India Haj Seva Samiti president and former member of Central Haj Committee Hazi Naushad Ahmad Aazmi on Friday demanded rollback of Goods and Service Tax (GST) on flight services for the pilgrimage.
Addressing mediapersons here, Mr Aazmi said that after GST cost of Haj Yatra has been raised to Rs 25,000 from Rs 40,000. He said that the Centre has also removed Haj subsidy to Air India and 18 per cent GST has raised that cost of the tickets. There should be a global tender for Haj Yatra tickets, he demanded.
In reply to a question, Mr Aazmi said Air India has no fixed criteria for the tickets of Haz commuters. From Varanasi it costs Rs 92,000, from Lucknow– Rs 80,000, Delhi– Rs 74,000, from Gaya–Rs 1.4 lakh and from Ranchi it is 1.3 lakh. He said it was injustice to Haj commuters.
He said that about 1.8 lakh people are expected to go for Haj Yatra, which means Rs 5 to 6 crore will be extra burden on Haj commuters after GST. Prices could be half if a global tender is released for the pilgrimage, Mr Aazmi said.
