Cuttack, Nov 20 (UNI) At least seven passengers were killed and several others injured, some of them seriously, when a bus skidded off on Mahanadi bridge after hitting a buffalo and fell 30 feet below the river bed.
The bus carrying about 40 passengers was on its way from Talcher to Bhubaneswar when the mishap took place.
The authority pressed the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force(ODRAF) and Fire Brigade personnel in the rescue operation.
The Rescue teams had a very tough time to approach the river bed which was in the mid river from the bridge to rescue the passengers from the bus which turned turtle on the river bed.
Odisha Director General of Police (DGP) R P Sharma confirmed seven casualty in the mishap.However, the toll might rise further as some of the seriously injured passengers are battling for their life at the SCB Medical College and Hospital.
The rescue teams deployed two boats to ferry the injured passengers from the mishap site to the river bank from where they wer shifted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has expressed deep concern over the mishap and direcetd the Sports Minister Chandra Sarathi Behera to proceed to the spot and oversee the treatment as Health Minister Pratap Jena is away in Delhi.
