New Delhi, Nov 22 (UNI) A delegation of the Congress party on Thursday requested the election commission for withdrawal of pink ballot papers in Telangana, the procurement of which was ordered as per a memo issued by the state Government’s election department last month .
In a memorandum submitted to the EC in this regard, the Congress , pointing out that pink is the official colour of the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) and that the colour is synonymous with the party, contended that the usage of pink coloured ballots without doubt would give the TRS party an undue advantage over other contesting parties.
The party demanded that the EC withdraw the Impugned Memo by ECI, Telangana with immediate effect.
‘’Pink is the official colour of the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS), a political party contesting the present elections. The banners, party flag, manifesto, etc., are all pink in colour. The colour is synonymous with the party.
The Election Commission of India must take immediate note of this issue and withdraw the above mentioned Impugned Memo by ECI, Telangana with immediate effect. It would be against the spirit of conducting fair and free elections in Telangana if any part of the process seeks to favour, even inadvertently and without malice, one party over the other.
Furthermore, the withdrawal of the Impugned Memo would not materially alter the conduct of the elections, but it would go a long way in securing protection against arbitrariness in administrative decision making. We hope the Commission treats this matter with the attention that it deserves and initiates immediate action to take the issue forward,’’the Congress said in its memorandum.
The memorandum pointed out that the Memo has already been challenged by the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (through its General Secretary and Chief Spokesperson, Dr. Sravan Dasoju) vide a letter dated 12.11.2018 to the Chief Executive Officer, ECI, Telangana but no action had been taken to stop this violation till date
‘’The ECI is tasked with the conduct of free and fair elections under the Constitution. All efforts are made to ensure that the process is as independent and neutral as possible. That is why we are certain that the ECI will agree this is an important issue that needs immediate redressal,’’it said.
The Memo dated 26.10.2018 passed by the Government of Telangana, General Administration (Elections.C) Department, had directed the Commissioner of Printing, Stationary and Stores, Telangana to procure 9 Lakhs Pink Coloured Ballot Papers for the Assembly Elections in Telangana.
