Kumaraswamy to hold a meeting with Sugar Mill owners on dues to Sugar Cane growers

Bengaluru, Nov 22 (UNI) Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy is scheduled to hold a meeting with Sugar Mill owners to address the issue of dues to farmers by the Mills towards purchase of Sugar Cane purchased.
The meeting assumes significance as BJP which launhced Statewide agitation demanding the Congress-JDS Coalition government to address the issue of Sugar Cane growers.

Opposition Leader in the Legislative Assembly B S Yeddyurappa, who is also BJP State President, addressing the agitators yesterday had announced that “BJP will not rest till Mr Kumaraswamy meets the demands of farmers.
The Chief has failed to come to the rescue of farmers in the State though they are facing several problems due to drought in 100 Taluks, besides dues from the Sugar Mill owners.”

Prior to meeting with the Chief Minister, the Mill owners held a meeting at a private Hotel to chalkout the problems to be put forth during the discussion.
According to Government sources the dues have been reduced from Rs 2000 crore to Rs 38 Crore, but according to farmers the dues are to the tune of about Rs 430 crore because of Mill owners agreeing to pay above the FSL price fixed by the State Government.

After learning about dues of Rs 430 crore the Chief Minister pulled up the Mill owners to clear the dues before purchase of sugar cane and Mills should start crushing immediately as Sugar Cane grown is drying and losing weight leading to loss to the farmers.

Mr Kumaraswamy, who was complained by farmers during the meeting about exploitation by the Mill owners about yield of sugar and weight, asked Mill owners to fix weighing machine etc., to ensure there is no exploitation.
