PM meets Sarpanches of J&K, says high voter turnout showed people’s faith in local bodies

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that empowerment of grassroots institutions is a significant step in taking Jammu and Kashmir in securing the rights and development of the local people. “Essence of democracy lies in empowerment of the common citizen, to which our government is totally committed,” Prime Minister tweeted on his interaction with 48 newly elected Sarpanches of Panchayats from the state who called on him here on Wednesday.

“The high voter turnout in the polls clearly displays immense faith that people of J&K have put in grass root democratic institutions of the country,” he said. Mr Modi exhorted them to strive for the welfare and upliftment of people. He also assured the delegation that he and his government are committed to the empowerment of the people.

He urged the members of the delegation to prioritize people’s interests, as the people have reposed enormous faith and hope in them. Prime Minister also wrote: “These elected Sarpanches are extraordinary individuals who have shown immense courage in the face of heavy odds. They have made an everlasting contribution towards enhancing the democratic fabric of the state”. “Assured them full support from the Centre in their many efforts,” he said.
