Four members of a family, including father, his son, daughter and daughter-in-law, died and three others fell ill due to suspected food poisioning in Hullutotlu village in Hiriyur taluk in this district on Thursday night. Hiriyur police on Friday said that the family, who worked in a nearby poultry farm, had consumed porridge and sambar yesterday night and suddenly fell ill. They were immediately shifted to Chitradurga and Davanagere district hospitals where they succumbed.
It was suspected that the jowar flour used in preparing the pooridge could have been contaminated. Samples were sent to FSL and after the report is received the real cause of death would be known, a police official who investigated the incident said.
The dead were identified as Chittappa (70), his son Shashidhar (40), daughter-in-law Hemalatha (30) and daughter Bhagyamma. While his another son was not at home while Chittappa’s wife Shantamma had not consumed dinner as she was unwell and saved their lives, police said. Three grandchildern of Chittappa – Sadananda (13), Mutturaj (14) and Ajay (14) were admitted to Davanagere district government hi-tech hospital and their condition was improving, hospital sources said.
The incident comes in the backdrop of 15 people losing their lives after consuming Temple ‘prasada’ in Salwadi village in Chamarajanagar district of Karnataka early this week.
