Activist Medha Patkar has met Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan at his office here.
Medha Patkar was in the city to attend a protest meet of a group of people who were evicted as part of acquisition of land for widening of the NH from 30 metres to 45 metres in the State. Though the Chief Minister’s office had given the permission for the activist to meet the Chief Minister (CM) at 16:40 hrs on Thursday, but the appointment was cancelled after her criticism on the government in a protest meet in front of the Government Secretariat.
Soon after receiving a message informing that the appointment was postponed due to tight schedule of the Chief Minister, Medha Patkar began a sit-in protest in front of the Secretariat in protest against the denial of the appointment. When the issue became live, the Chief Minister’s office again swung into action and informed that she can meet the Chief Minister at 17:30 hrs. Later, Medha Patkar withdrew the protest and met the Chief Minister in the evening and discussed issues related to land acquisition, compensation to those lost the land.
After the meeting, the activist said, ”She appreciated the state government for its bold stand on Sabarimala issue.”However, the CM was adamant to widen the NH from 30 metres to 45 metres for the development of the state.
