Former Bengal Industry Minister passes away

Kolkata, Dec 24 (UNI) Former West Bengal Industry Minister Nirupam Sen passed away in the early hours of Monday. Sen breathed his last at a private hospital in Salt Lake on the eastern fringes of Kolkata at around 5.10 am. He was 72.

“Nirupam Sen passed away on Monday at 5.10 am,” a hospital official said.

Sen, a former Politburo member of CPI(M), was the state’s Industries Minister in the erstwhile Left Front government from 2001 to 2011.

He suffered heart attack. Since then his health condition had been fragile. 

According to hospital officials, he was admitted about a week back with a chest infection and had been in critical condition since then. 

The top leadership of CPI(M) including general secretary Sitaram Yechury and Politburo member Brinda Karat met him at the hospital then.

CPI(M) sources said Sen’s body will be taken to his residence in Salt Lake later on Monday and from there it will be taken to a city mortuary till Tuesday. 

The body will be kept there for people to pay final homage.

Sen’s body will be taken to the CPI(M) and CITU office in the city on Wednesday and from there to his ancestral home in Bardhaman town in East Bardhaman district where his last rites will be held.
