Senior Congress and former Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Wednesday sought to taunt BJP leaders and tweeted in Hindi saying the NDA regime is going back to the Congress suggestion of a ‘single standard rate of GST’.
“Kal tak GST ki ekal dar ek murkhta-purn vichar thaa, magar kal se yeh sarkaar ki ghoshit lakshya hae (Until yesterday a single standard rate of GST was a stupid idea. Since yesterday, it is the declared goal of the government!), Mr Chidambaram tweeted in both Hindi and English.
The former Finance Minister maintained the Revenue Neutral Rate (RNR) prepared by the Chief Economic Advisor was kept in the ‘dustbin’ by the Narendra Modi goverment, but it was promptly tabled before Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and also “promptly accepted”.
In another tweet, Mr Chidamabaram, who was the Finance Minister during the UPA regime which initiated the process of implimenting GST, wrote, “Until yesterday capping GST at 18 per cent was impracticable. Since yesterday, the Congress party’s original demand of an 18 per cent cap is the declared goal of the government”.
Mr Chidambaram’s comments on the government’s move on GST came two days after Mr Jaitley maintained that the 28 percent slab could be faced out soon except on luxury ‘sin goods’.
It may be mentioned here that Prime Minister during his Mumbai visit had hinted that the government was working on the proposal to bring 99 per cent of items below the 18 per cent GST slab.
The GST Council, which met here on Saturday reduced rates of 33 items from 18 per cent to 12 per cent and 5 per cent.
