Amid reports of complaints of delay in disbursal of scholarship by University Grants Commission, Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar said there is no backlog and a special grant of Rs 250 crore has been sanctioned to release the scholarship amount.
Mr Javadekar while addressing reporters here on Wednesday said on the 30th of every month scholarship amount would be credited in students’ account.
He also informed that a total of 2,44,000 students receive scholarship under different schemes and a total of Rs 4000 cr per year has been allocated for the same.
“We (UGC, AICTE & the HRD Ministry) have thoroughly reviewed the entire system and would remove any difficulty encountered by students,” said Mr Javadekar.
The Ministry disburses scholarship under various schemes including National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) under which a total of 1, 28,000 students receive Rs 10,000 per year.
Similarly, under Jammu and Kashmir scholarship programme, a total of 5000 students get amount ranging from Rs 1.3 lakh to 4 lakh per student.
Under UGC’s ‘Ishan Uday’ scheme, an amount of Rs 2.5 lakh is being given to each 21000 student.
Students doing Junior Research Fellowship avail Rs 25,000 to Rs 35,000 per month. A total of 30,000 students get the scholarship.
Also, M.Tech students receive Rs 12,500 per month. Scholarship for single girl student pursing PG gets Rs 37,000 per year.
The HRD minister on hike of scholarship amount said, “We are positive on that.”
Earlier, research scholars protest demanding hike in fellowship which was not revised since 2014.
