Baramulla, Dec 31 Alert troops foiled a major Border Action Team (BAT) attempt to strike a forward Indian post along the Line of Control (LoC) in Naugam sector in the frontier district of Kupwara when they gunned down two intruders on Sunday, a defence ministry spokesman here said.

Meanwhile, official Twitter account of Chinar Corps said “Pakistan gets befitting response to an attempted BAT attack in Naugam sector, Baramulla. IndianArmy foiled a major attempt to strike a forward post along the LoC in the early hours. At least two likely Pak soldiers neutralized and an array of warlike stores recovered”,

Spokesman said troops guarding the LoC noticed a group of intruders sneaking into this side under the cover of heavy firing by Pakistani troops in Naugam sector early this morning. Indian troops also retaliated and the exchange of fire continued for some time.

He said the intruders attempted to move by exploiting the thick jungles close to LoC and were assisted by heavy covering fire of high calibre weapons such as mortars and rocket launchers from the Pakistani posts.

However, the movement was nonetheless detected by the vigilant troops deployed along the LoC, he said adding the fire-fight initiated by Pakistan was given strong retaliation by Indian Army and the exchange of fire continued the whole night.

He said later during prolonged searches in the thick jungles and difficult terrain, two bodies of “likely Pakistani soldiers” were recovered along with a large cache of warlike stores.

He said the search operations are still underway in the Sector to sanitise the dense fores area. It was also reported that a few other intruders managed to escape across the LoC, taking advantage of the Pakistani firing and adverse weather and visibility conditions.

He said the attackers were wearing combat dresses like Pakistani Regulars and were carrying stores with Pakistani markings. “Some intruders were also seen in BSF and old pattern IA dresses as part of deception. They had intruded well equipped with IEDs, incendiary materials, explosives, and a plethora of arms and ammunition,” spokesman said.

He said from the recovery, it was estimated that they intended to carry out a gruesome attack on the Indian forward post in Naugam secto. “We will ask Pakistan to take back the mortal remains of deceased likely Pakistani soldiers since Pakistan did provide full covering fire support to these intruders”, he said.

There are over 200 trained militants waiting in launch pads near the LoC in POK, waiting to cross over to this side of the LoC before the infiltration routes are closed due to heavy snowfall. However, troops guarding the LoC are on high alert to foil any infiltration attempt.
