Puducherry, Jan 1: New year 2019 was celebrated with pomp and gaiety in the union territory of Puducherry.
People thronged temples here to worship the deity on the occasion and long queues were seen in front of the famous Manakkula Vinayagar temple here since early dawn. Special pooja were performed in most of the temples including the Panjavadi Anganeyar temple near here where a special Abishegam was performed to the 32 ft tall Hanuman idol.
Special mid night mass and early morning mass were conducted in all churches here. Puducherry chief minister V Narayansmay participated in the mass at the Nellithoppe Madha church mid night last night as well as the special pooja at the Manakkula Vinayagar temple this morning.
A large number of people including tourists from all over the country and abroad thronged the beach here midnight last night to welcome the New year.They exchanged greetings and danced with happiness. Police made elaborate security arrangements to maintain law and order on the occasion.
Puducherry Lt Governor Kiran Bedi,chief minister V Narayansamy,his cabinet colleagues, speaker V Vaithilingam, Lok Sabha member R Radhakrishnan and leaders of different political parties among others greeted the people on the occasion.
